HI-PHAE

HI-PHAE is an ongoing project that was conceived in 2023, with the intention to challenge the conventional cone-driver loudspeaker after having identified sustainability-related issues as well as failing to cater to various important listening modes.

By using Distributed-Mode Loudspeakers (DML) with organic materials like dried oyster mycelium as diaphragmatic material, these issues can be overcome, without compromising audio quality.

HI-PHAE 1 - FIXED STATION

The first public configuration of the HI-PHAE listening system was showcased during the 2024 Graduation Exhibition of the BA Sound Arts at the London College of Communication (UAL).

These hexagonal blue oyster mycelium panels were hung closely together so listeners could position their heads in between, to perceive the surprising detail and clarity these loudspeakers produce in an intimate listening experience, whilst looking out over the lively Elephant & Castle roundabout.

The loudspeakers played an unreleased album composed by Ties IJsbrand Linssen titled OMNI . HOLO which features extended ambient compositions, as well as another project with more percussive-heavy tracks including spoken word and poetry.
